Idaho cracks down on aggressive drivers

Idaho law enforcement will be cracking down on aggressive driving for the next two weeks in their new statewide aggressive driving campaign.

The emphasis patrol starts on August 1st and goes through the 13th. “It is our goal to reduce the impact to our motoring public by encouraging everybody to slow down, back off, pay attention and be patient,” said Sgt. Erik Turrell with the Coeur d'Alene Police Department's CARE Team.

The patrol is sponsored by the Idaho Department of Transportation and the Office of Highway Operations and Safety. Kootenai county deputies will be conducting the patrol at various locations around the county. They will focus on aggressive drivers who speed, tailgate, fail to yield and cut in and out of traffic.

Single lane closures planned for Snoqualmie Pass next week

If you’re heading to Western Washington anytime next week via I-90, transportation crews will be working on the roadway between Easton and Cle Elum.

There will be some single lane closures to be aware of and delays between Monday, April 9th and Friday, April 13th. Crews will finish replacing parts of the roadway in both directions due to deteriorating concrete.

The project is scheduled to be finished next fall.

A good tool while you’re on the road, check WSDOT’s @SnoqualmiePass Twitter account that updates with transportation issues for that region. There’s also the @WSDOT account that covers all of the state.

Road Work On Government Way Starts This Week

Drivers will run into some construction along Government way that started this week. It's a part of the Government Way, Dalton to Hanley Project. After installing sewer mains, the road will be reconstructed to create a five-lane roadway with sidewalks on both sides.

The first phase of the project includes installing a sewer main in Government Way at three different locations. Those include:

  •  Government Way between Dalton and Hanley avenues.
  •  Dalton Avenue east of Government Way about one-half block.
  •  Hanley Avenue east of Government Way about one-half block.

Two-way traffic will be maintained but drivers may run into delays. At times, people will be diverted to a gravel shoulder.

After the sewer main is installed, the roadway will be expanded. At that time, additional water and storm sewer utilities will be installed. Sewer work is anticipated to begin on Monday, March 5th, and be completed by April 30th. Reconstruction of the roadway is scheduled to begin on May 1st with an anticipated completion date in September.

Post Falls Police Find 72% Compliance During Seat Belt Emphasis

A recent grant allowed Post Falls Police along with the rest of participating Idaho law enforcement to focus on seat belt safety from February 7th to the 29th. Sgt. David Marshall says they their post campaign survey showed 72% compliance in seat belt usage.

The survey counted 100 cars at one location before and after the campaign. From that number they count how many were actually wearing their seat belts. Prior to the campaign, only 70% of drivers were complying at that same location.

The campaign shared the message of driving safely through advertising with the help of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who helps supply the grants.

During the emphasis campaign, Post Falls Police increased their patrols with $1,800 reimbursed by the administration with 40 hours contributed by officers. The grant pays for new traffic equipment.

Marshall says they're starting up another emphasis campaign in March. They'll be focusing on impaired drivers from March 10th to the 18th.
