You can register online here or by going to the first three weeks of ski school on January 12, 19 and 26th. Classes end March 16th, 2013.

Cyclists to take over Coeur d'Alene for the Fondo

Cyclists to take over Coeur d'Alene for the Fondo

What is a Fondo? It may sound like a car or something you eat but for Coeur d'Alene, its a giant bike race that's gaining national attention.

On Saturday, September 29, cyclists will fill the streets of downtown Coeur d'Alene for the 1st annual Coeur d' Fondo. It's a race where riders can choose from four different courses that range in mileages from 108 miles to a family friendly 15 miles. And at the end riders will be rewarded for the efforts at the the Coeur d'Alene Oktoberfest.

And due to a large spike of interest nationwide, it's sure to be crowded downtown.

"When we first started out, we thought let's keep it small. Let's keep it to 200 to 500 riders," said race director Issac Mann. "But we got so many entires, we had to stop at 800."

Mann said the unanticipated spike is due to so much support from the area which led to the word being spread around the United States.

"We have people from Alaska, Georgia, Ohio, Portland and California signing up for this race," said Mann.

Idaho trail improvements underway

Crews are working on their second phase of trail work on the Centennial and Prarie Trails in North Idaho.

They already finished work on all gravel shoulders out to the Washington state line but now its time for asphalt repair.

Starting August 13, the section from Higgens Point to Riverstone Park will be seal coated. There will also be trail patch and repair work on the portion between Interstate 90 and Highway 41 in the same week. The following week, crews will be crack filling and seal coating the same stretch of trail.

Then from August 27 to September 7, the remainder of the Centennial Trail from Highway 41 to the Idaho/Washington state line will be completed.

Riders are asked if they come to a portion of trail having work done to walk around the trail instead of choosing an alternate route. There will also be spotters in front and in back of the construction to remind people to slow down and ride on the shoulders.

Post Falls little league team playing Northwest Regionals

You can watch the Northwest Regional qualifier tomorrow on ESPN 2. The semi-finals taking place in San Bernardina will feature the Post Falls Little League team at 2 p.m. The young team has only one lost under their belt to Washington.

The round robin wrapped up today, so the winners of tomorrow’s semi-finals will advance to the World Series that will take place in Pennsylvania.

The Washington team is undefeated so they’ll be seated number one and the Post Falls team will be number two.

Maintenance to begin on Idaho trails

Nothing can ruin a nice summer bike ride like a bumpy and cracked trail. That's why the Coeur D'Alene Parks Department is starting maintenance on the Centennial and Prarie Trails.

A city spokesperson said both trails need to be seal coated and riders will need to walk around the area while work is in progress. The good news is, the coating only takes 2 hours to dry. The bad news is, crews can only work on one mile of trail per day.

Crews will have a someone at both the head and tail of the area where repair work is being done to let riders know where they will need to walk around and where they can get back on the trail.

Here's a repair schedule:

  • July 31-August 3: Work will be done on Prarie Trail from north of the Riverstone area to Huetter Road.
  • August 6- August 13: Work to be done on Centennial Trail from Higgins Point to Riverstone Park.
  • August 13- August 20: Patch and repair work on Centennial Trail from I-90/Northwest Boulevard to  Highway 41.
  • August 27 to September 7: Work on Centennial Trail from Highway 41 to Idaho/Washington state line.
