Ride the Bases Charity Event Returns for 2013 Spokane Indians season

Spokane, WA - The Spokane Indians announced today that the Ride the Bases charity motorcycle ride presented by U.S. Linen & Uniform will return for its second year on Sunday, August 18th, 2013. The event is a motorcycle ride and poker run that starts at the Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson dealership and finishes at Avista Stadium. The Indians have upped the ante for this year's event as one rider will be entered to win a brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle courtesy of Miller High Life.

"We are excited to have this great event return for another year," said Indians Senior Vice President, Otto Klein. "Last year's ride raised crucial awareness and funding for our community and we look forward to partnering with the Rypien Foundation once again."

Man's inspirational story intersects with Humane Society fundraiser

One patch of black ice changed a Dalton Gardens man's life forever, but that hasn't slowed him down from finding ways to help and inspire others.

Nick Maniscaloa, 24, was traveling home from Walla Walla to North Idaho on Jan. 27, 2008, when he lost control of his vehicle after hitting ice and slammed into a flatbed semi trailer. Nick suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for four months.

“I was alive, but I wasn't really there,” he said. “The doctors told my parents that I'd be lucky if I lived.”

Nick said the doctors estimated that he would likely never walk or talk again. When all was said and done, he spent eight months in the hospital and “immediately got out and started therapy.”

“My brother, right at the end of my program, presented me a late birthday gift,” he said. “It was to walk 365 miles in 365 days.”

From Sept. 5, 2011 to Sept. 4, 2012, Nick walked more than 365 cumulative miles “down the street and everywhere, really.”

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading looks to give back

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading is looking to give back to the facilities that have made their 12-year operation possible this weekend.

The Drive During Five – named because it is the fifth week of the season – seeks donations for the facilities in which the league runs. All five of the facilities do charitable work, and have needs that must be filled in order to keep their operations strong.

“We would love if the parents of our participants could help these programs,” Suzy Orth, co-director of Upward, said.

The inspiration for the drive came from Upward's vision as a ministry.

“We are an independent league, but we partner with many local churches,” Orth said. “We want people to know that we are all a part of the church, but it doesn't matter what church you go to, we're still collectively a church.”
