National Drug Take Back Day

National Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, April 27th, police departments across the region will be hosting drug collections as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's fifth National Drug Take Back Day.

The DEA has collected over 1,000 tons of unused and expired prescription drugs over the last three years. The take back day was started to get the public more involved in the prevention of prescription drug abuse.

Unused prescription drugs in homes are considered a public health and safety concern by the DEA. According to the DEA this is because the drugs are “highly susceptible to accidental ingestion, diversion, misuse and abuse”.

A survey done by the DEA found that the majority of abuses get their prescription drugs through friends and family. Often times it's as simple as raiding the medicine cabinet. Americans currently abuse more prescription drugs than those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined.

Perfect weather for...skiing?

Yes, the sun is shining today and the thermometer is creeping into the 70's.  Even so, there's one more day of skiing and snowboarding that you won't want to miss.

Tomorrow, Silver Mountain is hosting its 9th annual Leadman triathlon, which involves skiing, a 7.4 mile muddy, downhill bike ride, and a 4.7 mile run.

If that sounds like too much work, you can pick up a "Silver Saturday" lift ticket ($39 for adults, $29 for kids) and enjoy the 14 inches of untouched snow that fell earlier this week.  This is the last day of skiing in the Inland Northwest - don't miss it!

Pink tractor at the finish line

Pink tractor at the finish line

Race for the Cure runners will be greeted by something new at the finish line this year. A bright pink tractor. Northwest Farm Credit Services have been working with volunteers and donors from across the North Idaho and Eastern Washington region to get the tractor ready in time for its race day debut.

Northwest FCS is the finish line sponsor at this year's Race for the Cure and they wanted something big to greet finishers. Jennifer Rohrer, the Public Relations Communications Coordinator, saw a picture of a pink tractor online and thought it would be a great way to represent the communities that they serve.

Idaho Spring Job Fair

Idaho Spring Job Fair

The Idaho Department of Labor is hosting their Spring Job Fair tomorrow in Post Falls. Over 40 employers are confirmed to be there and are ready to hire in the next 60-90 days.

There are two job fairs a year, one in the spring and another in the fall. Frank Garcia of the Department of Labor says the goal of the job fair is to connect job seekers with employers that have current openings. Employers are from around North Idaho as well as some from the Spokane area.

The event will be held at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls from 10am-2pm on Wednesday, April 17th. Make sure to dress for an interview and bring your resume.

Sitting Volleyball Exhibition and Clinic

Sitting Volleyball Exhibition and Clinic

I came. I sat. I conquered. That's the motto of the USA Sitting Volleyball Association. This weekend the Evergreen Region Volleyball Association is hosting an exhibition and clinic to spark the area's interest in the fast paced sport.

Lindsay Walter, of the Evergreen Region, says the idea was born at a board meeting last month. They were discussing the possibility of the ADA passing a law that would require schools to offer sports for disabled students. Volleyball is relatively easy to modify to sitting, so they contacted Elliot Blake, the sitting volleyball coordinator for USA Volleyball and set things in motion.

The event will feature an exhibition game between Seattle's sitting volleyball team and local volleyball coaches. The teams will include both disabled and able body players. The game will be followed by a clinic put on by Elliot Blake. Paralympic sitting volleyball player Heather Erickson will also be on hand teaching skills during the clinic.

Wanted: Hoopfest Volunteers

Wanted: Hoopfest Volunteers

On Hoopfest weekend thousands will be in Downtown Spokane to be a part of the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the world. It takes a lot of planning and organization to run an event sporting over 7,000 teams, 250,000 players and 456 courts and have it go smoothly. But mostly it takes an army of volunteers and Hoopfest is already recruiting.

Last year over 2,500 volunteers helped make the event happen and this year organizers are half way to filling the volunteer ranks. Anyone can be involved, whether you have basketball experience or not. From court monitors to merchandise sales to general clean up there is a job for everyone.
