Idaho job fair has opportunities for Veterans and Active Military

Idaho job fair has opportunities for Veterans and Active Military

The Idaho Department of Labor is hosting a hiring event for Veterans and Active Military. There will be 42 employers on hand looking to fill open positions.

As of now, there are only eight veterans registered for the event, says Nicole Hauffman of the Idaho Department of Labor. Hauffman hopes that more will sign up for this great opportunity. The hiring event is open to Veterans, Active Military, Guard/Reservists and their families.

The job fair gives members of our military an active opportunity to meet with many different employers that are looking to hire all under one roof. Participants are asked to come prepared with their resumes and dressed for possible interviews.

There will also be a Business Boot Camp event. This workshop will offer advice and guidance on planning for success and financing opportunities.

"Ready, Set, Wear It!" life jacket event aims to set world record

"Ready, Set, Wear It!" life jacket event aims to set world record

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is kicking off National Safe Boating Week with an attempt to set the world record for the most life jackets worn. "Ready, Set, Wear It!" will take place Saturday, May 18th.

Idaho Boating Safety Class students will gather at the Kootenai County Search and Rescue building to model different types and varieties of personal floatation devices. It is part of a year long effort by the North American Safe Boating Campaign to promote safe and responsible boating.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 84 percent of boaters who drowned in 2011 were not wearing life jackets.

"Each year, as many as 500 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets," said Virgil Chambers, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council. "New life jackets on the market today make it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water."

"Ready, Set, Wear It!" will promote the newer, more versatile life jackets and show that there are more comfortable options than the giant, orange, cumbersome life jackets of your youth.

Livestock show is about more than just animals

Livestock show is about more than just animals

The sounds of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs are echoing through the buildings of the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds this week. The 78th Junior Livestock Show is in full swing.

Fluttering around the sounds of the farm is the sound of old friends re-connecting and new friendships being made. On the outside, the junior show appears to be all about the animals, but it is a cornucopia of smiles from hardworking kids and proud parents, sharp dressed cowgirls and cowboys with their perfectly trimmed steers, sheep wearing spandex and gleaming white goats looking for their next mouthful of alfalfa.

The Junior Show draws families from all across eastern Washington, north Idaho and western Montana.

“It's kind of a family tradition. My wife showed sheep and her dad before her,” said Eric Keller.

He and his wife have four children and raise sheep on their Deer Park ranch. Keller says the farm life is a way of life, one that helps build a strong foundation for their life.

Girl Scouts asking for support during Idaho Gives

Girl Scouts asking for support during Idaho Gives

Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho is hoping the region will jump on board and donate during the first ever Idaho Gives campaign.

Idaho Gives is a 24 hour giving campaign sponsored by the Idaho Nonprofit Center. The event gives donors the opportunity to give to any of the 531 participating non profits across Idaho. For every $10 donation made groups will be entered to win a Golden Ticket prize. The more donors that GSEWNI gets, the more chances they have to win prize money.

Groups have also been divided by size into three separate scoreboards. Each scoreboard carries an additional $5,000 worth of prize money that will be divided between the top five money raisers at the end of the day. Idaho Gives also features an Everybody Wins Award, this award takes a general pool of money and divides it by the percentage if the total raised. For example, if Girl Scouts raises one percent of the total for the entire campaign, then they receive one percent of the Everybody Wins Award.
