Could Caribou Go The Way Of The Dinosaur?

Could Caribou Go The Way Of The Dinosaur?

KXLY received numerous comments for reporter Anusha Roy's story, "Communities, Fish and Wildlife battling over caribou critical habitat". It aired last week on preserving critical habitat for the Woodland Caribou.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife proposed designating 400,000 acres in Idaho and Washington for the caribou.

The story that sparked controversy among environmentalists and loggers also prompted this letter to Kootenai Environmental Alliance. Their organization posted the above photo to Facebook of a letter they recently received.

A look at Silver Mountain's past

A look at Silver Mountain's past

Back before the majority of the world knew what snowboarding was, there was skiing and it was fashionable. Here's some photos taken at Silver Mountain back in the day - possibly the late 1970s or early 1980s. Marketing director, John Williams, isn't sure of some of the date, but says it was before his time.

The resort is gearing up for their "Jackass Day" on Friday. It's actually a day dedicated to the historical creation of the resort in 1968.

Earlier today we mentioned the history behind the event: "Jackass Ski Bowl on Wardner Peak opened to the public in January 1968 with a single Riblet chair. After four years, the name was changed to Silverhorn Ski Area. Then in 1990, it became known as Silver Mountain, after a major expansion of trails on Kellogg Peak."

Williams also had another historical factoid up his sleeve. The resort was supposed to open in December, but there wasn't enough snow, so they had to delay until January 7th, 1968 - thus Jackass Day.

A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

A warning for Lake Coeur d'Alene bird watchers

We wrote a story about the Eagle Watch in Coeur d'Alene a week ago.  Tonight, the Idaho State Police are warning excited bird watchers to be careful.

They say high traffic in the area around Lake Coeur d'Alene is creating a dangerous situation.  The problem is along State Highway 97 near Interstate 90 and South to Milepost 93.

ISP says the area is already congested with traffic.  It says bird watchers in the area are making it even more hectic.  ISP says drivers should park their vehicles off the road.  It says any vehicles on the pavement will be towed.

Will your region have a White Christmas?

Will your region have a White Christmas?

Consider this our holiday greeting card arriving just in time for the holiday weekend. It's a map displaying the probability of a white Christmas in areas around the United States using data from the National Climatic Data Center.

There's no way to zoom in, but if you look carefully at the Eastern Washington and North Idaho regions, our chances of a white Christmas range from 26-100 percent depending on where you're located.

Have a safe weekend and don't forget to email weather photos at news4@kxly.com.

New Forest Plan Amendment Sets Grizzly Bear Habitat Standards

New Forest Plan Amendment Sets Grizzly Bear Habitat Standards

After nearly fifteen years of debating the science of Grizzly Bear habitat, Northern Rockies Forests have finally set up a new amendment that sets the standards for forest planning.

The amendment sets the standards for motorized access in national forests and the northern third of the Idaho Panhandle forest. It doesn’t affect on-the-ground forest plans, but sets goals and standards for future planning.

Jason Kirchner, forest public affairs, has only been with the project for two years, but some employees have been working on this project since the beginning in the late 1990s.

“This decision, for us, is the best balance between maintaining the access for recreaters and maintaining the bears -- and the science supports that,” Kirchner said.

North Idaho got its share of snow overnight and in some areas it continues to fall. Curt Nead sent us a photo of his Hauser backyard covered in snow early this morning around 6:40 a.m.

Weather near Post Falls is expected to continue with more snowfall through the afternoon and possibly decline in the evening. Temperatures could reach as low at 16 degrees.
