T-Minus Four Months Until Accordion Festival 2012

Everyone! Take out your day planners and flip ahead to August. Now grab the nearest pen or pencil and scribble in the following item: “Accordion Festival 2012”. It’s the second weekend of August and we can barely contain ourselves.

Last year was a hoot with the parade of accordions and the bars filled with accordionists playing through the night. This year should not disappoint.

One of the headlining performers for Saturday night’s concert is a actually the most amazing thing you’ll ever seen.

Excuse us as we switch into first person mode. I saw Duckmandu in 2008 in Spokane during an event called “Monsters of Accordion”. He’s kind of a monster, like scary awesome. He’s playing that Saturday and he does mostly accordion covers of classical songs and punk rock. He has an album dedicated to the Dead Kennedy’s.

Coeur d'Alene HS student draws winning Arbor Day button

The winning artwork for this year’s Arbor Day button comes from Marina Thaxton, a junior at Coeur d’Alene High School. Her design will be printed on buttons to be given out at local Arbor Day events.

The local Arbor Day Committee received over 100 pieces of art submitted from middle and high school students in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Lakeland school districts.

Thaxton will also receive a check for $75, a t-shirt with her artwork printed on it and a supply of buttons to give her friends and family.

Arbor Day is scheduled for April 27th this year in Idaho. Tree seedlings will be given to 1,800 4th graders in Kootenai County next week. The buttons and seedling are paid for by donations from local forest product companies, nurseries and tree services.

Local author takes Spokane 'Into the End' of the world

Local author takes Spokane 'Into the End' of the world

Ever imagined what the end of the world would look like? Author Bonnie Paulson did. Into the End is the first book of three in a series chronicling the end of life as we know it in the Pacific Northwest.

“The whole western coast is chopped off because of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, you name it,” said Paulson.

Meanwhile, Spokane and Post Falls have stayed relatively safe from natural disasters, Paulson said.

“If Seattle dropped off the face of the Earth, which in Into the End it does, Fairchild is the only fueling station from here to Asia,” said Paulson. “If someone was coming in to attack you, they would want Fairchild.”

Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

Contrary to Popular Belief, There Are No Tree Forts Involved

This press announcement caught our eye in the station's mailbox. How could we resist a music festival called the "Treefot Music Fest"? Curious minds want to know if actual tree forts are involved, but a quick browsing of their website does not confirm our curiousity.

It's the first year for this festival that takes place in Boise from March 22nd to the 25th. It benefits the city's non-profit community radio station, KRBX, 89.9 FM.

The artist lineup is looking promising for those that are into modern sounds like Of Montreal, Blitzen Trapper, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, Talkdemonic, The Cave Singers and more. Formally based out of Spokane, The Globes will be performing at the festival as well. A full list of artists is available online.

Might be worth the drive down from the Panhandle to visit your central Idaho breathren. Let us know if you go.

Private investigation authors debuts new book

Years of private investigation stories turned out to be good material for a book. That’s how The Private Dick Diaries were made. Using actual cases, but rearranged to fictional the people and places, three authors collaborated to create a mixture of sarcastic comedy and a peek into the world of a private eye.

The authors will be in Hayden, Idaho signing copies of their new book in the series, Rules of Repo. It’s a benefit for TESH, a Coeur d’Alene based non-profit that provides professional rehabilitation services and vocational assistance for people with disabilities.

There will be a Q&A with the authors at well. The event starts at 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., February 9th at The Copa, located at 9265 N. Government Way.

Local artist, coffee roaster team up for "Sea of Love"

Local artist, coffee roaster team up for "Sea of Love"

You may recognize her artwork around Spokane even if you don’t know who she is. Tiffany Patterson has a strange style that takes you underwater to swim with impossible creatures. Her work is on the walls of local businesses and parks, but now it’s on a fair-trade coffee bag.

Doma Coffee, based out of Post Falls, releases a series of Valentine’s Day coffee every year. This is the fourth year and now Patterson’s art will be printed on the bag with soy-based ink. This year, the coffee is called: “Sea of Love”.

“The ocean plays a big role in my work and the creatures and happiness and humor are the main themes of my work,” Patterson said.

You can find her murals featured on the walls of Neato Burrito, a downtown burrito shop along 1st. If you go into the bathroom there, you can see more of her art on the dozens of event posters pasted on the wall.
